What to do

  1. Before beginning this activity, pass out one piece of paper to each student. Choose a simple three-letter CVC word with three sounds, such as “hat.”
  2. Direct children to fold their paper into four sections. Model with a piece of paper as you give directions in front of the room. Fold your paper in half once. Good. Now fold it in half again in the other direction. Good. How many sections do you think you will have when you open up your paper? Call on one of the students who has raised their hand. Very good. You will have 4 sections.
  3. I am going to say a sound. I want you to put that sound in the first section on your paper. Point to the correct section on your paper for students to see.
  4. “/h/.” Write the letter for “/h/” in the first section. Good. Now let’s move the second section. Point to the correct section on your paper for students to see. “/a/.” Write the letter for “/a/” in the second section. Good. Now let’s move to the third section. Point to the correct section on your paper for students to see. “/t/.” Write the letter for “/t/” in the third section. Very good.
  5. Now let’s say all those sounds together now. “/h/ /a/ /t/.” Very good. What is the word? Have students say the word all together.
  6. Now in the fourth section I want you to draw a picture of the word. Point to the correct section on your paper for students to see.
  7. As students progress, move on to four-phoneme words.
  8. Observe students do the work. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
