Grade: 2, 3
Group Size: Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class
Length: 10 minutes
Goal: Given a vocabulary word, the student can represent it as a drawing for his or her peers to identify. Conversely, given a drawing, students can use their vocabulary knowledge to identify the word the drawing is supposed to represent.

Materials: Index cards, drawing paper, pencils, board or chart paper

What to Do

Prepare

Write a list of vocabulary on the board or on a piece of chart paper. Write each word from the list on an index card.

Assign students to two teams. Make sure each team has a pad of paper and a pencil.

Model/Instruct

Today, we will get to know our vocabulary words better by playing Win, Lose, or Draw.

1. Choose a student to help you model how to play the game. Complete each step together with the class.

One person from the first team will come and choose a card.

Let the student choose a card from the pile.

[Student’s name] will have to draw the word on the card. He/she will only have 30 seconds to draw the word.

Allow your student to make the drawing.

The rest of the team will need to guess the word [Student’s name] is drawing. You can use the list on the board to help you. You will have only ten seconds to guess after the drawing is finished.

Ask the teammates of the student to guess the word.

If the team guesses the word, it gets one point. Teams will take turns. The team with the most points at the end wins!

Practice

2. Have students play Win, Lose, or Draw.

Now it’s time to play Win, Lose, or Draw. Remember to stay quiet when it is not your team’s turn to guess the word.

3. Monitor the students’ performance. After each round, you may cross off the used word from the list to narrow down the options for future rounds.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Ask these students to use the word in a sentence after they have guessed it.

For Struggling Students:

You may have these students draw the vocabulary word in teams of two.

For ELL Students:

You may have these students draw the vocabulary word in teams of two.
