Materials: index cards, markers,
Goal: Student will be able to decode a new word
Items: Student will reinforce word families beginning with the vowel sound a.

What to do

  1. Show the student a list with word families beginning with the vowel sound "a" (10 words).
  2. Have the student write the word on an index card.
  3. Ask the student to draw a picture on the other side of the index card.
  4. The student continues with the next word and so on...
  5. Once all flashcards are created, the student will have to quickly decode all the words within a minute to win the game. You can reduce the time once the student becomes proficient.

About this activity

I have used this home-made activity with my daughter since pre-k. She quickly mastered many sight words and continues to do so. This game is fun and challenging, and it is also a mutli-sensory approach, which is conducive to learning.
