Materials:
Goal: Given a spoken word, the student can isolate its initial sound (“mat” -> “/m/” ).
Items: 1 and 2 syllable words

What to do

  1. Today we are going to play a game. You have to guess what I am thinking. I am going to give you clues. When you think you know, raise your hand.
  2. I am thinking of something that begins with /d/. It’s an animal that might live in your house. Wait for students to raise their hands and call on someone. Good, I was thinking of a dog.
  3. Now I am thinking of something that begins with /b/. You will find a lot of these in our classroom. Wait for students to raise their hands and call on someone. Good, I was thinking of books.
  4. Continue giving riddles until most students have had a chance to participate. Call on students individually. (Students love to be first to answer, so if you let the whole group respond, the student in need of the most practice will get the least.)
  5. For a variation try this activity with final sounds. Now I am thinking of something that ends with /t/. It is something you use to play baseball. Wait for students to raise their hands and call on someone. Good, I was thinking of a bat.
  6. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
