Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Nonsense word cards
Goal: Given three-letter nonsense words, students will be able to identify the three phonemes in each.
Items: pim, zib, hig, dop, yin, bem, hud, vil, mup, seg

What to do

  1. Print a list of nonsense words before the activity.
  2. Introduce the activity to your class. I'm going to say a word. You repeat the word and tell me all the sounds you hear in the word. These are not real words, so just listen for the sounds.
  3. Say the first word slowly to your students. Have them repeat it and then give you all three individual sounds. Repeat with the remaining nine words. You may ask students to respond as a group or on an individual basis.
  4. Observe students carefully and reflect on students' performance in an Activity Log.
