What to Do

Prepare

Make a copy of the Color Poem Web for each student.

Copy the Sample Color Poem onto the board or chart paper.

Model/Instruct

1. Explain the lesson.

Today you will write your thoughts about one color on this Color Poem Web. You will use the five senses to help you describe a color. You will tell how the color looks, feels, smells, tastes, and sounds.

Practice

3. Students complete the Color Poem Web independently.

4. Students use the Sample Color Poem as a guide to write their own Color Poem using the information from the Color Poem Web.

5. Have the students form small groups to share their Color Poems aloud.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to write another Color Poem using a different color.

For Struggling Students:

These students may have difficulty transferring the information in the Color Poem Web to poem format. In this case write the first three words of each line of the Color Poem for them.

For ELL Students:

These students may have trouble relating a color to the five senses. In this case, have them draw pictures that the color brings to mind. Then they can describe the color picture in their small group.
