Reintroduce: Biography

Goal: Given a template for a biography, students will be able to gather biographical facts and form biographical opinions.

Materials: Board or chart paper, Biography Web (print here)

What to Do


Make a large version of the Biography Web on the board or chart paper.


1. Review the purpose of a biography and its elements.

Who can remember the purpose of a biography? Yes, biographies tell about the lives of famous people. We also learned that a biography includes important facts such as the person’s childhood and family life, what they did for a living, their accomplishments or why they are famous, and other interesting facts.

2. Explain the lesson.

Today we will use this web to write some biography facts together. We will use facts about me! I may not be famous everywhere, but I am famous enough in this room. You can ask me questions to find out the information that we need to complete the web.


3. Direct the students to the large version of the Biography Web and prompt them to ask questions to find the necessary facts.

The first section is titled childhood and family life. This section of a biography usually includes facts about where and when the person was born. What do you need to ask me so that we can fill that section in?

Record the answers on the large version of the Biography Web; repeat this process for the remaining three sections of the Biography Web.

4. Ask students to add an opinion.

Now that we have filled in all the other facts, we need to add an opinion. This part is entitled My Opinion. This is where you will add your opinion about the famous person. Remember that an opinion is how you feel or think. Who can give me an opinion to put in this section?

5. Review the lesson.

Today we used a web to write some biographical facts and an opinion. Start to think about what kind of person you would like to know more about.


For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to list famous people that they would like to write about.

For Struggling Students:

These students may have difficulty coming up with questions to ask the teacher. In this case just provide the information to them.

For ELL Students:

Provide these students with explicit instruction for the vocabulary in the Biography Web before this lesson.
