From FreeReading

Jump to: navigation, search
Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K
Group Size: Individual, Small Group
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Picture cards for short a words, picture cards for other words
Goal: Given two pictures, the student can identify when the pictures represent rhyming short a words.
Items: short a words (hat, cat, rat, fat, sat, mat, bat, pat).

What to do

  1. Prepare a small group of picture cards. Each card should include both an image and a corresponding word. Make sure to include short a rhyming words as well as other early literacy words.
  2. Show your student or students two of the picture cards. Can you see the word for this picture? What about this picture? Good! Do these words rhyme? Continue to do this for other cards. You may wish to keep all the short a rhyming words separate.
  3. When you are done, review by writing down some or all of the words you covered and circling the ones that rhyme. Alternatively, you could have your student or students circle the rhyming words.
  4. If a student has trouble, you may wish to make notes in an Activity Log. This activity can easily be modified for other groups of words.
