Group Size: Individual
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index Cards, Image:Tic Tac Toe Board.doc
Goal: Given a printed regular word, students can sound out the word and then say the word (abc -> “aaabbbccc” -> "abc").
Items: All letter sounds learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards. Divide students into partners.
  2. Today you are going to play tic-tac-toe with your partner. Raise your hand if you already know how to play tic-tac-toe. Good. Clarify instructions if any students are unsure of the rules.
  3. I am going to give each set of partners a tic-tac-toe board. I am also going to give you some word cards. This is how my version of tic-tac-toe is a little different. Before you can take your turn, you must pick a word from the pile on your desk, sound out the word, then say the word.
  4. Your partner will give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down. If you sound out and say the word correctly, you can take your turn and make a mark on the board. If you don’t sound out and say the word correctly, then your turn is skipped.
  5. Watch how I do it. Demonstrate picking a card. Show your card to the students. Now I am going to sound out my word. Caaat…Cat! Thumbs up or thumbs down? Great. Now I can take my turn on the tic-tac-toe board.
  6. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
