Sounding out fluency, Relay Race

Materials: Sounding out word cards, masking tape, blackboard
Goal: Given a printed regular word, students can sound out the word and then say the word (abc -> “aaabbbccc” -> “abc”).
Items: All letter sounds learned so far

What to do

  1. Before beginning this activity, tape three Sounding out word cards for each student playing to the board. Alternatively, you can laminate the cards and attach Velcro to the back to use with a Velcro board. Make sure that none are too high for students to reach with a jump. Divide students into two teams. Make a starting line with tape on the floor.
  2. Today, we are going to have a relay race. That means that you are going to race in teams. Each member of each team will do one part of the race. The team that finishes first is the winner.
  3. Your team will line up behind the starting line. The first person, in this case Billy, will run up to the board, take three cards, and run to the person next in line, Jasmine. Billy will sound out and then read the words to Jasmine. Alternatively, you can have students do one card at a time and cycle through three times.
  4. When he sounds out and reads the words correctly, Jasmine will give him a thumbs-up. Billy will run to the back of the line and it is Jasmine’s turn. She will run to the board, take another three cards, and run back to the next person to sound out and read her cards.
  5. You will continue until every person on your team has sounded out and read three cards. The first team to finish wins the race!
  6. Are there any questions? Answer questions, clarifying the rules of the game.
  7. Observe students. For students who struggle, offer help and make a note in an Activity Log.
