Materials: One piece of posterboard divided evenly into about 20 squares with one large drawing of your choice drawn on one side of the posterboard and one word in each square on the other side, cut the posterboard into the 20 squares
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can recognize the word with automaticity ( abc -> "abc" )
Items: Any set of word-recognition words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Set up the posterboard with the word side facing the students. Set the posterboard in the same order as you created it so that when students flip over their card, the picture will be revealed in order.
  2. Have students sit in a circle on the rug.
  3. Today, we are going to play a game called “Picture Words.” In this game, every time you read a word, you can flip over the word card. On the other side of the word card, there is a part of a large picture. Everyone will get a chance to read a word and when you read the word correctly, you will flip over the word card to reveal the picture. Watch as I try it first.
  4. Show students how to read the word and flip over the word card.
  5. Now let’s play!
  6. Let students play the game.
  7. Good job playing "Picture Words!" Look at that beautiful picture we’ve created! You are such good readers.
  8. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
