Word-Form Recognition Fluency, Post-It Placemats

Materials: A piece of construction paper for each student, a set of about 10 post-its for each student, a writing utensil for each student, a set of regular word cards students have learned thus far
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can recognize, spell, and write the word with automaticity ( abc -> "a" "b" "c" )
Items: Any set of word-recognition words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Have students sit in their seats/desks.
  2. Pass out materials. One pencil for each student, one placemat of construction paper, 10 post-its each.
  3. Today, we are going to play a game called “Post-it Placemats.” In this game, you will all get a placemat, just like you eat on at home. Then, I will give you each 10 post-its. I will read 10 regular words we’ve learned so far. So every time I say a word, write it on your post-it note and stick it to your placemat. Let’s begin. I will first pass out the materials.
  4. Read a regular word and wait for students to write it on the post-it and stick it to the placemat. Repeat for a total of 10 times.
  5. Excellent. Now I want you to read the words to yourself. You have two minutes. Try to read them as many times as you can.
  6. Give students two minutes to read the words. Then ask them to stop.
  7. If you notice a student is reading a word incorrectly, have them stop and retry.
  8. Excellent work making your placemats. Turn over your placemats and write your name on the back. You can take these home tonight and practice your words at home. Good work, everyone.
  9. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
