Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index card size letters cards, (print them here)
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can say the word with automaticity (mat -> “mat”)
Items: All word recognition words learned so far

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, determine which words you will have students build. Print out all letter cards necessary to build those words. Make sure you have enough for each student to have a set of cards.
  2. Sit in a circle and pass out letter cards to each student. Today we are going to make words with all of the letter sounds we have learned. Look at the letters in front of you. Point to the p. What sound does p make? Give students a chance to answer. Correct them if necessary. Have them identify and say a sound for each card in front of them.
  3. Okay. Now we are going to make a word. Let’s make the word pet. What is the first sound you hear in pet? Good. /p/ is the first sound in pet. What letter is that? Good. Find your p and place it in front of you.
  4. What sound do you hear next in pet? Say the word if you need to. Good. /e/ is the next sound. What letter is that? Correct. E. Find your e and place it after the p. What is the last sound you hear in pet? Good. /t/ is the last sound. What letter makes that sound? Good. Find the t and place it after e. Let’s read the word all together.
  5. Okay, now let’s say we want to change pet to pit. Say that with me. "Pit.” What sound is different? Is it the first sound? Is it the second sound? Good. The second sound is different. What is the second sound in pit? Good. /i/ is the second sound. What letter is that? Very good. Take your i card and put it where the e card was. Let’s read the new word.
  6. Repeat the procedure with the words pet, pit, put, and pot.
  7. Excellent job today. We will play word building again another day with other sounds that we have learned.
  8. On other days repeat the procedure with sequences such as:
        Bit, bet, bat, but
        Fit, fat, fan, fun
        Sit, sat, set, sat
        Tin, tan, ton, ten

Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
