Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Overhead projector, dry erase markers
Goal: Given a word, the student can read the word with accuracy (fan -> "fan")
Items: All word recognition words learned so far

What to do

  1. Today we are going to play a game and see how many words we can build with the letters we have learned so far.
  2. Write the word “fan” on the overhead projector. Sound out this word with me, and then we will say it together. Fffaaannn. Fan. Good.
  3. Now watch what happens when I change one letter of the word. Cross out the n. I am going to change “n” to “t.” Underneath the word fan, with the n crossed out, write the word fat.
  4. What is my new word? Call on a volunteer to read the new word. Good, the new word is fat.
  5. Now I am going to change another letter. How about if we change the “f” this time? Cross out “f” and write the word “cat” underneath it. What is the new word? Call on a volunteer. Good, the new word is “cat”.
  6. Let’s keep going. I am going to change the “c”. Cross out the “c” and write the word “bat” underneath it. What is the new word? Call on a volunteer. Good, the new word is “bat”.
  7. Repeat the procedure with more words and continue calling on students individually. (Students love to be first to answer, so if you let the whole group respond, the student in need of the most practice will get the least.)
  8. Continue creating new words with the sequence: fan, fat, cat, bat, mat, man, map.
  9. Excellent. See how easy it is to build words with the letters we know? I bet you didn’t know you could read so many words?
  10. We will try this again another day with different words. Repeat this activity on a regular basis with different words as students learn more letter sounds.
  11. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
