What to Do

Prepare

Make a copy of the Fairy Tale Planner for each student.

Optional: Display the completed large version of the Fairy Tale Planner on the board or chart paper (see Reintroduce: Fairy Tale).

Model/Instruct

1. Explain the lesson.

Today you will write your own fairy tale using the Fairy Tale Planner.

2. Explain the Fairy Tale Planner.

At the top you will write your own ideas for the setting, characters, and problem and solution. Next, you will put those ideas into paragraph form at the bottom. Remember to use special phrases at the beginning and end of your fairy tale. Be sure to include descriptive words to keep the reader interested.

Practice

3. Have your students complete the Fairy Tale Planner.

4. After the students have written their fairy tales, have them share them with partners.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to provide a creative title and illustrations for their fairy tales.

For Struggling Students:

These students may have trouble putting the fairy tale elements into paragraph form. In this case, allow them to dictate their stories.

For ELL Students:

Allow these students to use simple sentences when writing their fairy tales.
