Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1, 2
Group Size: Small Group, Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Image:Bingo Board.doc, Bingo chips (i.e. pennies, chips, scraps of paper), index cards, Image:Compound Word List.doc
Goal: Given half of a printed compound word, the student can read that word and then generate the second half of the compound word (air -> “air”-> “airplane”).
Items: All compound words learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, prepare bingo boards by writing the second half of a compound word in each box. For example, for the word airplane, write "plane" inside a box on the bingo board. Make all of the bingo cards different. If possible, laminate bingo cards.
  2. Make a set of cards for the caller to use during the game. To do this, write the first half of each compound word on an index card. For example, for the word airplane, write "air" on the index card. Shuffle the deck of cards.
  3. Pass out one bingo board and enough bingo markers to cover the board to each student. Today we are going to play bingo. I am going to call out the first half of a compound word. If you have the second half of the word on your card, cover that word with a marker. Hold up a marker to show students.
  4. For example, if I call out “air” you should look for “plane” on your card. If you have plane, cover it with a marker. Once you have it covered, you must read in a quiet voice the word "airplane."
  5. Let’s play now. If you get a straight line, yell out bingo. It may be helpful to draw a bingo board on the chalkboard and illustrate examples of straight lines.
  6. Make sure to check all words when a student wins.
  7. You may wish to allow the winner to be the next caller.
  8. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
