Length: 20 minutes

Goal: Given a spoken irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity
Items: All irregular words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a list of 20 sight words. Use the Irregular word cards to create the list. Print out 2 copies of each word and attach to index cards. Laminate cards if possible. Shuffle the cards and place them all face down.
  2. How many of you have ever played the game Memory before? Good. Today we are going to play Memory. However, instead of looking for matching pictures, we are going to look for matching words.
  3. The first player is going to flip over two cards. If you have two words that match, then you must use that word in a sentence. Once you give a sentence, the cards are yours to keep and your turn is over.
  4. If you flip over two words that do not match, you must flip them back over and your turn is over.
  5. The object of the game is to have the most cards at the end of the game.
  6. Remember, you must pay attention when other people are taking a turn! Everyone who is playing the game will help decide if the match and the sentence are correct. When a player in your group is correct, give him a thumbs up. If he is incorrect, give him a thumbs down.
  7. Observe small groups of students play the game. For the students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
