Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1, 2
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Irregular word cards, fly swatters
Goal: Given a printed irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword").
Items: All irregular words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, print Irregular Word Cards and display them in the classroom on a Word Wall.
  2. Divide the class into two teams. Line up the teams.
  3. Today we are going to play a game called Smack the Wall. I am going to give one person from each team a fly swatter.
  4. Then I am going to say a word from the word wall. The first person to smack that word with their swatter earns a point for their team. After you smack the word, you must say it.
  5. Then both players must read the word again before they can return to their seats.
  6. Let’s get started.
  7. Repeat the game until each student has had a turn to go at least once.
  8. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
