Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 5 minutes
Materials: bean bag
Goal: Given a printed letter, the student can say a word that begins with its sound (a -> "apple")
Items: All letter sounds learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, write the alphabet on the chalkboard. If the alphabet is already posted in your classroom, it is not necessary to do this. Have the entire class stand in a big circle.
  2. We are going to play a quick alphabet game. You must pay attention. You never know when it is going to be your turn.
  3. I have a bean bag. I am going to throw the bean bag to one person. That person must catch it, and yell out a word that begins with the /a/ sound.
  4. Then that person will throw the bag to another person. And the next person has to say a word that begins with “b.”
  5. Then that person will throw the bag to someone new. What letter do you think the next person will have to say? Good. The next person will have to say a word that begins with the letter “c.” What pattern are we following? Very good. We are going in alphabetical order
  6. Just in case you need help, you can always look at the alphabet that is posted in our room.
  7. Remember, when you throw the bean bag, please throw it gently. And try to always throw it to someone who has not had a turn yet.
  8. Are there any questions?
  9. Observe students play the game. For the students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
