From FreeReading

Jump to: navigation, search
Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 5 minutes
Materials: 2 pieces of paper, markers
Goal: Given a vowel sound, the student can identify words with that sound ("/a/" -> "may”).
Items: All long vowel sounds learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, write “a” on one piece of paper, and write “e” on the other piece of paper.
  2. I am going to read a word out loud. When I say the word, I want you to decide if you hear “e” or “a” in the word. Okay?
  3. Before we begin, what sound does “a” make? Call on a student with his hand up. Clarify that you are looking for the long a sound. What sound does “e” make?
  4. Now we need to two volunteers to hold up our letters. Choose two volunteers to hold up the paper. Position the “a” person at one end of the classroom, and the “e” person at the other end of the classroom.
  5. Okay, ready? Listen to the word, and then point to the vowel you hear. Here we go.
  6. Repeat the procedure with more words and continue calling on students individually. (Students love to be first to answer, so if you let the whole group respond, the student in need of the most practice will get the least.)
  7. Say a variety of long a and long e words out loud for the class, such as rain, clay, eat, made, see, me, hay, chain, clean, sweep, gave, peas, cheese, May, came.
  8. This game can be played with any two long vowel sounds.
  9. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
