What to do

  1. Before beginning this activity, choose sentences from the Decodable letter combination passages that contain the desired letter combination. Make sure that students have learned all necessary prerequisite lessons to be able to read the sentence. Write the sentences on the board.
  2. Today, we are going to do something called choral reading. That means that we are all going to read out loud together. I will point to the words so you know what to read.
  3. We are going to read these sentences together. We will read each one a few times so we can practice reading it correctly.
  4. Before we read it quickly though, let’s sound out each word. Point to each word and sound it out with the students.
  5. Great. Now we know how to read each word. Let’s try to string them together so we can read the sentence at a good pace. Point to each word as you and the students read it out loud together. Continue reading the same sentence out loud until students read with fluency.
  6. Ok. That was great. Let’s try the next sentence. Repeat the same process for all of the sentences with the desired letter combination.
  7. Observe students. For students who do not participate or who struggle, offer help and make a note in an Activity Log.
  8. Provide a comprehension check at the end by asking students questions to make sure they comprehended as well as decoded the sentences.
