Lesson Type: Build Mastery
Grade: 2, 3
Group Size: Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Goal: Given definitions, students will be able to match them with the appropriate vocabulary words in a game of bingo.

Materials: Bingo Card (print here), paper bag, pencils, index cards, board or chart paper

What to Do

Prepare

Print out one Bingo Board for each student.

Write a list of vocabulary words on the board or on a piece of chart paper. Write the definition for each word on an index card.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the vocabulary words you have displayed.

Today, we will learn more about these words by playing bingo. Before we begin, you will need to make your bingo board. Write one vocabulary word from this list in each box.

2. Allow students time to write the words on their Bingo Cards.

In this bag are cards with definitions on them. I will ask a student to reach in, take a card, and read out the definition.

You will look at your boards to see if you have the word that goes with the definition. If you have the word, you can put an X through that box.

When you have a row of completed boxes, say, “Bingo!” The first person to do this is the winner!

Practice

3. Have your students play Vocabulary Bingo.

Remember to put an X in the box of a word that matches the definition that is read aloud.

4. Walk around to monitor the students’ performance during the game.

5. Check to make sure that all of the words on the winning board are the correct words.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

You may wish to have these students play until the entire board is marked.

For Struggling Students:

Have these students write down a prediction of a definition for each word on their board. That way, when the definition is called, they will be prepared.

For ELL Students:

Encourage these students to choose familiar vocabulary words for their boards. Make sure they know the meaning of each vocabulary word on their board before playing. Allow them to work in pairs while the game is played.
