Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1, 2, 3
Group Size: Whole Class
Length:
Materials: A deck of cards which includes each word-recognition word learned so far (one for each student and a few extra as buffers)
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can recognize the word with automaticity ( abc -> "abc" )
Items: Any set of word-recognition words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Have students remain in their seats. This activity is to get students in line quickly and in a learning-is-fun mode.
  2. In order to line-up today, you must correctly read a word. I will point to each student individually at which point I will hold up a word card. You will say that word and if you read it correctly, you can line up. You may get three chances on each word card. Only answer when it is your turn.
  3. Call students individually and show them a word card. Give them three tries to get the word correct. If they cannot read the word, please help the student sound out the word. You may also chose to ask for another volunteer. Continue until all students are in line.
  4. Good job, readers! Now we can go to ___________ (say destination).
  5. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
