Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Overhead projector, dry erase markers
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can say the word with automaticity (mat -> “mat”).
Items: All regular words learned so far

What to do

  1. Today we are going to play a game and make words with all of the letters we know. Watch what I write on the board.
  2. Write sa on the board. Can anyone read that for me? Good. Now who can think of a letter to add to the end to make a word? Call on a volunteer. Good. We can add t to the end. Write t at the end of sa. What word is that? Excellent. The new word is sat.
  3. Repeat the procedure substituting different endings after sa (t, d, g, m, p).
  4. Good. You did a great job making words today. We will play again another day with different words.
  5. Repeat the procedure on a regular with other word combinations such as:
        Ra (g), (m), (h), (g), (t)
        Le (d), (g), (t)
        Si (p), (r), (t), (x)
        Pi (g), (n), (t)
        Ho (g), (p), (t)
        Cu (p), (t)
        Fa (t), (d), (n), (r)

Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
