Materials: high frequency word cards: he, she, they, sat, ran, jump, up, down, here, plastic bucket
Goal: To create phrases from high frequency words
Items: High Frequency Word Cards: he, she, they, ran, sat, jump, here, down, up

What to do

  1. Make flashcards of the high frequency words. Place them in a plastic bucket.
  2. Tell the students that they are going to play a game called "Fishing for Phrases". Model choosing 3 cards from the bucket and attempting to arrange them in an order that makes sense. Read to the group and decide together if it makes sense.
  3. Each student takes turns choosing 3 word cards from the bucket. See if the words can be arranged to create a phrase that makes sense.
  4. If the words can not be arranged in an order that makes sense, put the words back in the bucket. If the words can be arranged in an order that makes sense, read the phrase to the group.
  5. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
