Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1, 2
Group Size: Individual
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Irregular word cards, Image:Tic Tac Toe Board.doc
Goal: Given a printed irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword").
Items: All irregular words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game print Irregular Word Cards. Glue them to index cards, and laminate if possible.
  2. Today you are going to play tic-tac-toe with your partner. Raise your hand if you already know how to play tic-tac-toe. Good. Clarify instructions if any students are unsure of the rules.
  3. I am going to give each set of partners a tic-tac-toe board. I am also going to give you some word cards. This is how my version of tic-tac-toe is a little different. Before you can take your turn, you must pick a word from the pile on your desk and read the word.
  4. Your partner will give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down. If you read the word correctly you can take your turn and make a mark on the board. If you don’t read the word correctly, then your turn is skipped.
  5. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
